Knights of the New Crusade

Gometric  Go Metric Magazine #20 has a pretty hilarious interview with the Northern California's only Gospel Garage Punks, the Knights of the New Crusade.  In it the Knights mention a new record they are putting out, Knight Beat:  A Challenge to the Cowards of Christendom.  Pick up the magazine, read the interview, and whatever you do, don't take yourself to seriously...

Clorox Girls, nay. Gimme Gimme Gimme Gimme Gimme some HEAD!

Head1

Went over to the Comet yesterday to try and check out the Clorox Girls and it was packed...so much so that rather than waiting outside in the cold in hopes for some movent in or out of the club that we headed over to the Funhouse to see Seattle's favorite glue sniffin' punks, HEAD.  I hadn't listened to their records in years, but the set was a good mix of stuff I was familiar with.  "Tire Shreddin'", "Hypnotism", "Sneakin' a Peek", and a cover of the Kinks' "I'm not LIke Everybody Else" made for a good time.  If you fancy yourself as a HEAD fan, try this survey, I got 10 out of 15:

My New Home - Seattle

Seattle Yep, that's right, I just moved to the Capitol Hill area of Seattle last week for work.  I've done a very little bit of exploring and have found a few divey punk rock clubs and have heard about some cool record stores.  If anyone can point me in the direction of some cool shit or would be willing to show me around, let me know.

The Willowz - Tonite - Spaceland -

Willowzpic The Willowz play Spaceland in Silverlake, CA tonite.  Here's a review I did about their Dionysys release a couple of years ago.  Hope to see if my assumptions hold true...

The Willowz – s/t ***1/2

Dionysus Records

Another LA band that has eluded my eardrums for far too long!  These guys and girl play cool sloppy rock n’ roll that is really addictive,...  I really dug this one from start to finish.  They’ve got an incredibly frantic haywire sound, derivative of stuff like the faster numbers from theVelvet Underground and the Modern LoversThe vocals come at you like a spit rocket off course, and the music is comes at you head on and grabs you buy the hips and makes you shake.  My favorite tracks are “Meet Your Demise”, “Equation #6”, “Get Down”, “Put Together”, and “End Song”.  The only throwaway is a slow forgettable track called “I Wonder”.  I have a hunch this band is even better live!

Nardwuar Interviews

http://nardwuar.com/radio/  Funny shtick by King Khan &/the BBQ show on Nardwuar's show.  Listen to King Khan talk about how ska today is an abomination, how Gerry Roslie spurted blood on the microphone when the Sonics recorded,  how the Spaceshits got scabies in Vancouver, and hear him repeatedly offer to tea bag the Serviette himself.  Fast forward to the middle of the stream to hear it... "nerd-wuar" definitely had his hands full....

Invisible Eyes - Laugh In The Dark - Bomp

Bomp is back with another great release! The Invisible Eyes are an incredible primitive stomp/garage/psyche band capable of launching your mind into a trance like hysteria whilst begging your backbone to let slip. Unlike a lot of wimpier psyche that has seemed to proliferate the genre over the years, these guys can punch out a real rock n' roll energy. So much of that stuff begs you to smoke reefer, lay down, and die. The Invisible eyes, by contrast, beckon you to get off yer ass and shake a tail feather. The sound has some serious kick to it and is not slowed down in the slightest by their distorted vocals, fuzzed out guitars, and omni present organ. There are a few songs that I wasn't crazy about but they are really the exception to the rule on this one. This is probably the most interested record I have heard in a long, long time and comes highly recommended.

Link Wray Dead -

I don't know that this is confirmed to be true as I couldn't find a news source to confirm it...but according to various emails going around and posts on message boards, Link Wray died today Nov. 19th at 76 years of age. Rest in Peace, Link. Link was an amazing guitarist with style, that's right STYLE. Link's sound will surely be kept alive as the masses continue to attempt to ape his genius. Thoughts and prayers go out to the family of this truly original character. Spin a Link tune today and pay homage.

Gearhead releases the Lords of Altamont -

Yes Indeed! Jake Cavaliere (ex-member of the surf drenched Bomboras) and his rowdy gang of biker punk thugs are out at it again. After many line up changes - (Max left for Vooduo - and what's his face left his post as 2nd guitarist to be true to his day gig), it'll be interesting to hear their new stuff. Last time I saw them they opened up for GuitarWolf (prior to Basswolf's unfortunate demise). Hoping to get ahold of the new shwag.

Coffin Lids - ‘Round Midnite - Bomp Records CD

The Coffin Lids, out of Boston, play wild and wooly garage rock n' roll, and I stress the rock n' roll. It's really hard for me to make a correlation with their sound and other bands--but here they remind me of the Neins or Booker T and the MG's crossed with the Humpers or maybe a little like Murder City Devils. Realize that they are definitely more on the rockin' side of the spectrum, but they are blessed with good taste. Straight up rawk goes straight to the trash bin for me nowadayz anyways. Standout songs on here include - I'm Gonna Have My Way (with the 5678's), Action, Tonight You're Going to Die. Everything else on the cd is still way listenable. Bands like the Coffin Lids and The Mistreaters just may fill the void left by bands like the Makers in previous years, as said Makers continue to spiral into irrelevance with hairspray, scarves, and unrivaled egomania. Coffin Lids - 'Round Midnight- is a winner and immediately goes into heavy rotation here at www.x2rr.com

King Khan & The BBQ Show - Show Review

Made it out to Mr T's Bowl in LA for the King Khan & BBQ Show...Kind of a weird scene at Mr. T's. Lots of aged barflys, belligerent illegals, and gong show rejects for the open mic nite. Ended up hanging outside for a bit and was more than impressed with my brothers new found friend repeatedly pantomiming his gunning down of the president, George Bush. There was also a guy there with his face painted like a skull, singing threw some kind of voice senthisizer to god awful goth tunes...by far the biggest oddball of the nite. But I digress... King Khan & BBQ show were absolutely amazing. They ran through their more popular tunes and covers: Fish Fight, Waddlin' Around, Chuck - a - Muck, and Out of Time to name a few. They have such a rockin' attitude. Fun, Fun, and more fun was the agenda of the night. Hell, King Khan even did a wardrobe change mid song on stage as he became a dead ringer for Tina Turner (post-beating). The energy of the band was contagious and about 30 die hard fans danced to their hearts content before storming the stage (as invited) for the last song of the night. If you can't get into the rock n' roll that these guys deliver, then it's time for a head check or an impromptu ear exam. If you get a chance check them out on the remainder of their US tour. You'll be glad that you did. I know I was...Look for new photos this weekend at www.x2rr.com . Big thanks to Erin Martinez for snapping pics.

All Kindsa Girls - The Real Kids Documentary

Heard about a documentary coming out soon on 70s Boston punk rock n' roll sensations, the Real Kids. I haven't been able to find out details other than the premier is in San Francisco in the near future. If anyone has the details on the film dates and locations, please fill me in. Here's an interview with the film maker, Cheryl Eagan-Donovan: http://www.newenglandfilm.com/news/archives/03june/eagan.htm . BBQ - Tie Your Noose CD - (BOMP Records)

Speaking of BBQ as I was in a recent post. This cd originally escaped my hot hand... I must admit, I was oblivious to Mark Sultan's a.k.a. BBQ involvement in the Spaceshits and Les Sexareenos ...but dug Les Sexareenos (Spaceshits were not a fav. of mine)...but anyways I digress. A friend of mine pointed out how great this was, and I dug through a mountain of mail to make a real pass at listening to this thing. BBQ's Tie Your Noose is the must have c.d. of the year, I do declare! There's certainly a vibe to this record. Think the energy of early rockabilly via Sun Records mixed with the a guy doing his best at being Ronny Spector. That's probably not even a good comparison, fuck it, it works for me. Bottom line, this thing shakes and shimmies, and delivers awesome vocal melodies over his one man ryhthm section. The thing that sets BBQ apart, he actually has the BALLS to really SING. Granted their's some hootin' and hollerin' but he's a really interesting singer, and you can hear his heart all the way through this recording.

Jeffrey Novak One Man Band - 7” (Fistful of Records)

Jeffrey Novak One Man Band - Think I reviewed this guy a while back on a couple of cdr's he sent me...but I was flipping through some recent mailings and I ran across the 7" released a while back on fistful of records. Comparisons to the late Hasil "the Hunch" Adkins are inevitable, but Jeffrey does it in a spirt all his own and at a speed that if the Hunch comparison was accurate it would be Hasil at Mach 10. I love the mania captured on this lofi recording. Jeffrey wails and screams and spits and moans with a fervor that must speak to his local roots in Tennessee. The songs on here are fuckin' great. "Down", "Don't Wanna Live ALone", "Get Out". "Rockin' Horse". Drop your guitar tabs and your music sheets, this stuff eminates right from the soul. If you like BBQ or Ape City R & B, then this shit is surely for you...

A.N.S. - Romancing the Phone 7” (Banal Existence Records)

A.N.S. - Romancing the Phone 7" (Banal Existence Records) - This is some good spirited Texas Skate Punk. In the spirit of JFA, the Dead Kennedy's, and the Faction comes ANS. They sound a lot like the aformentioned Kennedy's, especially on the first track "Wrong Turn". REally fast hardcore skaterock. Vocals remind me a little bit of Los Olvidados. Although I'm not a huge hard-core fan, I can see myself listening to this before my next trip to the skate park. Oh, and by the way, ANS stands for "Annihiliate New School" in case you were wondering... Grab yer board and hit the pool.

Kajun SS - $40 Dollar Quartet - 7”

My new favorite band. King Louie Bankston and friends put together some serious sleazy rock n' roll. German Cajun is an amazing full tilt raw rock n' roller. Great throaty vocals over some serious punchy musical licks. YOu can't help but feel the energy on this one. On the flip there's a cover of the Rings' "Automobile". I want more!

Filthy Thieving Bastards - My Pappy was a Pistol

248126534_m Got the new FTB promo "My Pappy was a Pistol" courtesy of our friends at BYO Records.  FOr those who may not know the Filthy Thieving Bastards, they are a San Francisco collection of punks playing Macgowan-esque rock n' roll, and includes members of the Swinging Utters.  Word on the street has been that they did a mini tour with Spider Stacy of the Pogues, and that's no surprise when you listen to this cd.  The music on here is the perfect soundtrack for throwing back the beers or ruminating alone in reclusive mode.  Life's bitter sweet, and this cd definitely captures that mood.  The opening track, i think it's called "That's Life" kicks things off nicely..definitely my favorite track on this here nugget...
